The FDA has sent 25 warning letters to U.S. companies and two foreign individuals who currently market a broad range of products with fraudulent claims that they cure and even prevent cancer. In addition the FDA advises American consumers not to purchase or use any of these products, which include various tablets, teas, tonics, black salves, and creams sold over the internet.
According to Gary Coody, R.Ph., the National Health Fraud Coordinator and a Consumer Safety Officer with the FDA Office of Regulatory Affairs, there are several red flags that alert consumers to companies engaged in cancer treatment or prevention fraud. These companies frequently use bogus and exaggerated claims to promote their products. Coody urges consumers to recognize the following phrases as red flags:
➢ "treats all forms of cancer"
➢ "Skin cancers disappear"
➢ "Shrinks malignant tumors"
➢ "Non-toxic"
➢ "Doesn't make you sick"
➢ "Avoid painful surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or other conventional treatments"
➢ "Treat Non Melanoma Skin Cancers easily and safely"
The FDA also warns consumers to be aware of other signs of health fraud when they are seeking information about any health product or medical treatment. Beware of:
➢ Statements that the product is a quick and effective cure-all or a diagnostic tool for a wide variety of ailments.
➢ Suggestions that a product can treat or cure serious or incurable diseases.
➢ Claims such as "scientific breakthrough," "miraculous cure," "secret ingredient," and "ancient remedy."
➢ Impressive-sounding terms, such as "hunger stimulation point" and "thermogenesis" for a weight loss product.
➢ Claims that the product is safe because it is "natural."
➢ Undocumented case histories or personal testimonials by consumers or doctors claiming amazing results.
➢ Claims of limited availability and advance payment requirements.
➢ Promises of no-risk, money-back guarantees.
➢ Promises of an "easy" fix for problems like excess weight, hair loss, or impotency.

The FDA considers these products to be unapproved drugs marketed in violation of federal law because the products claim to cure, treat, mitigate, or prevent disease and have not been shown to be safe and effective. The FDA advises that people using these products should talk to their doctor about discontinuing their use. Although officials couldn't point to any particular examples of harm to patients they urge anyone who has experienced any side effects while taking the products to seek appropriate medical attention.
David Elder, director of the Office of Enforcement in the FDA's Office of Regulatory Affairs explained that the statements made about these products are dangerous because they could prevent a patient from seeking proper treatment for cancer. They could also harm a cancer patient by interacting with other drugs the patient is taking. Health fraud is a "cruel form of greed," Elder said in a news conference, calling fraud involving cancer treatment "especially heartless."
Officials said that if the warnings are not heeded within 15 days, the agency could take action including seizure of the products and criminal prosecution.
