Healthy at Home: Reviewing Kids’ Fitness DVDs

Published: Monday, 6 July 2009

Fitness DVDs for kids are another tool parents can use to keep their kids on their feet and off the couch. They’re good to have on hand when inclement weather has your kids bouncing off the walls. They’re also ideal for kids who don’t feel comfortable exercising in classes or playing on teams. That being said, finding the right kids’ fitness DVD can be a challenge.

Three Ways to Change Up Your Weight Training Routine

Published: Monday, 29 June 2009

It’s easy to fall into a workout rut. Most of us are creatures of habit. We find something we like and stick to it. This can be an admirable trait in some circumstances, but when it comes to the continued success of your workout program, it’s a sure way to reach an exercise plateau. Here’s why: In addition to the boredom that sets in when you fail to mix up your workouts, there is a physiological phenomenon that occurs that can leave you feeling frustrated. The human body is very efficient and quickly adapts to the stress you place upon it.

Creating Active Playdates for Your Child(ren)

Published: Monday, 22 June 2009

As a first-time mother, I’m still getting used to the concept of “playdates.” I admit that I yearn for the days when playing didn’t require a carefully planned calendar and a social secretary. Playdates are a modern phenomenon, one that has developed as a result of our increasingly busy schedules and concern for safety. It used to be that children would simply go outside, round up kids in the neighborhood, and dream up ways to have fun. Kids would often be gone until the streetlights came on, returning now and then to grab a snack or settle a spat.

Parents with kids who are overweight or inactive often ask me for advice. They’re looking for an exercise plan that their kids will actually enjoy. This can be a tall order since kids who are overweight or inactive often do not feel comfortable playing sports or exercising in a class environment with other kids. Healthy Habits: Incidental Exercise

Published: Monday, 8 June 2009

Experts agree that to maintain good health, at least 30 minutes of normal daily physical activity should accompany your accumulated 2.5 hours of weekly vigorous exercise. But our modern lives have us completely at a disadvantage when it comes to being active. Progress and technology have made our lives so convenient, little physical effort is needed to get through a typical day. Gone are the days when we had to churn butter or chop wood to heat our home. We no longer have to use our muscles to open the garage door.

Active Ideas for an End-of-the-School-Year Class Party

Published: Monday, 18 May 2009

Near the end of every school year, I get calls from various anxious moms from my neighborhood. The situation is always the same: They’ve been assigned to organize their child’s end-of-the-school-year class party and they’re intimidated by the task. The party has to somehow be fun, memorable, unique, appealing to both boys and girls, and done on the cheap. I usually jump at the opportunity to help out because I have such fond memories of my end-of-the-school-year class parties.

Helping Girls Stay in the Game

Published: Monday, 11 May 2009

I quit playing soccer, the only team sport I ever tried, at age twelve. Perhaps it was our team’s losing season and unfortunate name (the Blueberries!) which convinced me to leave the field and head to the mall.
