The end of April marked the end of my No-Soda Challenge and I have to tell you that I am quite proud of myself. Though it was difficult at times, and I almost slipped up on several occasions, I mustered up my determination and soared past the finish line. I have actually decided to consider this a lifestyle change, and continue to remain soda-free. I hope my success in this endeavor will set the stage for the many challenges and possible roadblocks that I may face throughout my life.
I read a story the other day about a blind man who became only the third person ever to complete seven marathons, on seven continents, in seven days. At 50 years of age, Dave Heeley ran a total of 183.4 miles, that’s 26.2 miles each day to raise money for guide dogs. This week long stretch took him to the Falkland Islands, Rio de Janeiro, Los Angeles, Sydney, Dubai, Tunis and London. When he crossed the finish line of the London Marathon, he told reporters, “I am the first blind person to do this. It’s been a fantastic adventure and one I’m going to talk about for a long time.”
Wow, I guess so! A story like that bears repeating! My meager goal seems like a drop of water in a great big ocean compared to that. But I have to wonder how many smaller accomplishments this man had before reaching the top of the mountain. How many times did he fall, only to rise, brush himself off and start again? And are accomplishments relative depending upon the person?
I will continue to take small steps in achieving my goals and aspirations and hope that I can face the larger challenges with as much determination as this one. I love the words of James Cash Penney, the founder of Penney’s department store. He had a saying that was posted in every store, “If it is to be, it’s up to me.” I know my Mom and friends are there to help, but in the end, it’s all up to me. And when I’m able to attain better health and independence, I too will have something to talk about for a long time! Hope you will be here to listen!
