First of all, Mom’s birthday is coming up. Years ago, Mom said that her birthday was “just another day”. I think she said that so I wouldn’t feel bad about not being able to get out and get her anything. Before Granny passed away, she used to send Mom a card, as if it was from me, with money in it. Mom always played along! But I really would like to do something nice for her this year. It’s no particular milestone or anything, but she has worked so hard this past year trying to do home schooling, working, taking care of things around the home and everything in between. She never has time for herself these days.
I thought of asking her out to dinner as my treat, but that is so common. She is very particular about clothes, so I’m sure I couldn’t pick out anything that would suit her. I thought about a gift certificate for a spa day, but she is so modest, I don’t think she would enjoy revealing herself to people. She does really like the edible fruit bouquets, but they don’t deliver and she would have to pick it up herself, which would take all the surprise out of it. I am running out of ideas. I really could use your help.
Then, just two days later, we will be celebrating America’s birthday—the Fourth of July. Many families take advantage of the holiday and celebrate with a picnic or barbeque. Our city always has parades in the morning, and firework displays in the evening at the riverfront park and at the fairgrounds. I’m not sure what Mom has planned for us. I sure wouldn’t mind having some of her good hamburgers and grilled corn on the cob. Maybe if I take her out to dinner on her birthday, she’ll consider cooking on the 4th!!
I was reading some interesting facts about Independence Day. Did you know that on the first Independence Day in 1776, the estimated number of people living in the newly independent nation was 2.5 million? This July Fourth, the nation’s population will be around 304 million. Wow!
Normally, there would be a 3 in 4 chance that the tomatoes in your salad came from either Florida or California, but this year might be different due to the salmonella outbreaks.
And did you know that last year, dollar value of trade between the U.S. and the United Kingdom was $107.2 billion, making the British, our adversary in 1776, our sixth-leading trading partner today?
Anyway, regardless of your holiday plans, I hope you stay safe, healthy, and happy! And don’t forget to pass along those birthday ideas—there’s not much time left!
