The tasty health benefits that come with indulging in a little chocolate just keep getting sweeter, which is deliciously satisfying information for female chocolate lovers everywhere. The latest revelation comes from a Swedish study finding that the more chocolate women consumed, the lower their stroke risk. The delightful details of the analysis appear in the Journal of the AMerican College of Cardiology.

The latest study adds to findings of previous studies that have shown moderate consumption of chocolate, especially the dark variety, promotes heart health by aiding in the prevention of heart disease, and helping to keep blood pressure in check.

According to lead study author Susanna Larsson, of Sweden's National Institute of Environmental Medicine in Stockholm, “Even consuming a relatively small amount of chocolate had quite a large impact on stroke risk.”

Larsson’s investigation revealed that eating chocolate reduced the risk of hemorrhagic stroke caused by bleeding in the brain, as well as the most common type of stroke, known as ischemic stroke, caused by a cutoff of blood flow through the brain.

However, Larsson cautioned that moderate consumption of the decadent treat is the key. She pointed out, “Chocolate should be consumed in moderation as it is high in calories, fat and sugar. As dark chocolate contains more cocoa and less sugar than milk chocolate, consumption of dark chocolate would be more beneficial.”

Larsson also acknowledged that the study findings are not definitive proof that chocolate cuts stroke risk. She said, “Given the observational design of the study, findings of this study cannot prove that it's chocolate that lowers the risk of stroke.”
