A New Option for Migraine Treatment on the Horizon

Millions of people who suffer from migraine headaches would literally stand in line for a freedom from their pain, especially if they would not have to endure adverse effects to get relief. The good news is that this option may soon be available. Researchers are testing a new drug called telcagepant that works differently than standard migraine medications.

Fibromyalgia No Longer an "Invisible" Disease

The chronic disorder known as fibromyalgia is characterized by extensive muscle pain lasting for at least three months coupled with heavy fatigue. Other symptoms include problems with cognitive function and memory and concentration, as well as sleep disturbances and stiffness. The condition affects between two and four percent of the world’s population with most of the victims being women.

Simple leg pain can be a sign of a dangerous blood clot known as a deep vein thrombosis (DVT). OxyContin Safeguards May Reduce Abuse

OxyContin, a time-release version of the old narcotic oxycodone, was introduced in 1996 for use by seriously ill patients. Recently, the maker of OxyContin, Purdue Pharma LP, designed a new version of the drug with a plastic-like coating that they claim will make it harder to crush, therefore harder to abuse. They now seek FDA approval for the drug. But will the drug work as well on pain?

Aspirin as a Multi Relief Medication

Many people are curious about who invented aspirin and what it does. No one person actually invented the product aspirin, the origin of aspirin, as we know it, came about through research. The ancient Greeks recorded the use of willow bark, which contained aspirin-like substances, as a fever fighter. The tree contained a substance called salicin which is a naturally occurring compound similar to acetylsalicylic acid; the chemical name for today’s product aspirin.
